A whole new way to experience the excitement of home theater, the MDR-DS5000 reproduces sound so vivid and three-dimensional, it's nothing short of astonishing. Consisting of an infra-red transmitter that performs full Dolby Digital decoding and digital processing, and the headphones themselves that receive the infra-red signal, the MDR-DS5000 is ideal for use with your DVD-Video or DVD-Audio Player, DSS Receiver or Digital Television.

How It Works:

Virtual Dolby Digital reproduction is based upon the psychoacoustic science of Head Related Transfer Functions (HRTFs). Technically, HRTFs are changes to the volume and high frequency content of sound, caused as parts of your head obstruct the passage of sound from the source to your ears. HRTFs are important because they vary predictably, depending upon the angle the sound is coming from: front, sides, back or in between.
By systematically applying these HRFTs to all 5.1 Dolby Digital channels, the MDR-DS5000 recreates the sound field of an ideal listening room, achieving a startling illusion of surround sound using standard headphones. The beauty is, as long as you are in range of the transmitter, you'll always be in the "sweet spot", and the soundstage you hear will remain broad, deep and dynamic.
MDR-DS5000 kit includes high-powered transmitter, headphones, AC adapter, 2 nicad batteries and charger, optical connecting cable (Toslink to Toslink).

Transmitter Features:

Built-in Dolby Digital decoder for reproducing channel sound from DVD players, high definition televisions and other source components
Built-in Dolby Pro Logic decoder for unlocking the surround sound tracks often included in VHS Hi-Fi, stereo TV and other sources

High-powered processing is performed by Sony's proprietary Logic 3D circuitry. Employing the precision of a 24-bit DSP (Digital Signal Processer) operating at 44 million instructions per second (MIPS), the circuitry achieves an incredible representation of Dolby Digital surround sound.
