Canon's tradition for improving its product line with advanced imaging technology has never been more evident than with its newest generation of the world's best selling 35mm SLR camera, the EOS Rebel. The EOS Rebel 2000 offers numerous feature enhancements while maintaining a price-point comparable to its predecessor, the EOS Rebel G. These enhancements include a new exterior design; a 7-point wide-area autofocus system (made possible with the use of a CMOS sensor); and a revamped focusing algorithm that increases AF speed and improves automatic focusing point selection accuracy

Features

Enhanced features include evaluative metering with a 35-zone AE sensor linked to each focusing point, and an exclusive E-TTL autoflash system also linked to the 7 focusing points. Standard features now available in the Rebel 2000 include depth-of-field preview, faster film advance and midroll rewind.

The EOS Rebel 2000 is a fully automatic, ultra-compact and quiet 35mm AF SLR camera with a built-in retractable flash. Improvement on the Rebel G's existing 3-focusing point system was achieved by using a newly developed CMOS sensor, thus allowing Canon to increase the number of focusing points in the viewfinder to seven -- five across and one above and below the center focusing point.

In addition, one of two autofocusing modes, One-Shot AF or AI-Servo AF for tracking moving subjects, is selected automatically according to the picture-taking mode. Focusing points are selected automatically when the camera is set in the following modes: Full Auto, Programmed Image Control, or A-DEP (auto depth-of-field) mode. When shooting in the Programmed (P), Shutter Priority (Tv), Aperture Priority (Av) or Manual (M) mode, focusing points can be selected manually or automatically.

The Rebel 2000 also uses a newly developed, 35-zone AE metering sensor which provides more precise exposure control in all metering modes including Evaluative metering (35 zones linked to the focusing points), Partial metering (9.5% of viewfinder area), Center-Weighted Average metering (set automatically in the manual mode), Preflash metering with E-TTL autoflash and 3-zone TTL off-the-film flash metering when used with the camera's built-in flash or a non EX-series Speedlite.

Originally found on the more feature-laden EOS System cameras including the Elan II/IIE and new EOS-3, the E-TTL flash system provides a natural balance between subject and background and also enables high-speed synch for automatic fill flash as well as FE (flash exposure) lock when used with the Canon 380EX, 220EX or new 550EX Speedlites.

The new battery pack BP-200 accessory, designed exclusively for the Rebel 2000, provides users with an alternative power source. The BP-200 uses AA-size alkaline, NiCd or NiMH batteries and offers a built-in vertical grip complete with auxiliary shutter release for quick and easy camera rotation from horizontal to vertical formats.
