The 12 parallel channel GPS 12MAP is physically identical to the GPS 12CX (excluding color display), including a rugged, waterproof case, dedicated zoom keys for quick map scaling, and a high-resolution LCD display complete with backlighting. The difference is, it offers a detailed basemap (not city point database) and is capable of uploading user selected maps from the Garmin MapSource CD-ROMs. An area of about 7500 square miles of residential street level maps can be uploaded into the approximate 1.4 MB memory of the GPS 12MAP. It also has a built-in antenna.

The basemap on the GPS 12MAP includes cartography information for North and South America including a database of cities, interstates, lakes, rivers, railroads, coastlines, and exit information for the federal interstate highway system. Whether you're driving on asphalt or water, GARMIN has the maps you need. Choose the "U.S. Roads and Recreation" CD for city street level detail and even inland marine features such as lake and river shorelines, boat ramp and marina locations. Other CD's give you worldwide coverage of coastlines, including a database of coastal cities, navaids and inland roads.

The GPS 12MAP features a differential-ready, 12-parallel channel GPS receiver that continuously tracks and uses up to 12 satellites to compute and update your position. It offers amazingly fast satellite aquisition and tight satellite lock-even under tree cover. But more than just an ultra-reliable receiver, the GPS 12MAP is loaded with navigation information including 106 map datums and 7 grid formats, plus advanced orienteering features like user datum/UTM/and user grid formats to define your own map parameters. Store your position as one of 500 waypoints or add it to any of 20 routes.

There are also 9 proximity waypoints to mark and steer clear of dangerous areas, and GARMIN's innovative TracBack™ function. A veritable "breadcrumb trail" TracBack will reverse your track log and help you navigate your way back home. Advanced navigation features like enhanced moving map graphics, average and maximum speed data, and trip timers are also included.

The GPS 12MAP features rugged military-tough construction in a waterproof case. But while tough on the outside, it’s operation is easy and logical. A new keypad layout includes separate "Zoom In" and "Zoom Out" keys for simple manipulation of the moving map page, and the enhanced graphic interface organizes 1000 waypoints into an easily accessible tab-file system.

The GPS 12MAP can run for 36 hours on 4 AA batteries, while a variety of accessories can be added.
